Primary Health & Outreach
Community outreach and health promotion focused on prevention, early action and stronger links between communities and health services. Karucan mobilises village health teams, conducts health promotion at markets, fishing landings and workplaces, and supports referral pathways to District Health Teams and hospitals.
TB Prevention, Control & Care
Community awareness and clinical support that contributes to prevention, early identification and linkage to treatment. Under the Stop TB Partnership's TB REACH Wave, Karucan strengthens private health-facility TB services, deploys satellite and mobile clinics to fishing communities, mines and prisons, and operates mobile-phone TB reporting tools for village health team referral and contact tracing. Integrated TB-HIV activities include isoniazid preventive therapy for PLHIV and HIV counselling and testing for TB patients.
Maternal, Newborn & Child Health
Antenatal care, immunisation, nutrition screening and under-5 services delivered close to where families live. Karucan integrates maternal and child health into routine clinical care and HIV/AIDS activities, with referral links to Bwera, Bundibugyo and Fort Portal Regional Referral hospitals.
Obesity Prevention & NCD Response
Awareness campaigns, community screening and professional training targeting obesity in the Rwenzori Sub-region. Recognised by the World Obesity Federation as part of its Holistic Approach Network, Karucan contributes a community-level perspective to Africa's response to obesity and related non-communicable diseases.
Liver Health Awareness & Screening
Each year during Global Liver Awareness Week, Karucan Foundation leads liver-health screening and education events across Uganda, focused on early detection and prevention. As a coalition member of the African Hepatitis B Advocacy Coalition, Karucan contributes community-level engagement to hepatitis B and broader liver-disease response.
Digital Health for Rural Youth
A technology-enabled programme designed to improve access to trustworthy health information, digital health navigation and referral pathways for young people in rural communities. Combines a youth-friendly mobile platform, USSD/SMS pathways for low-bandwidth environments, and youth participation in content design.
Livelihoods & Food Security
Sustainable agriculture, household nutrition gardens, women-led enterprise and skills training that improve income, dignity and resilience. Karucan's livelihoods work complements health programming — better nutrition supports recovery and prevention, and income diversification extends the impact of every outreach contact.
Water, Sanitation & Hygiene
Safe-water infrastructure, household sanitation and hygiene promotion that reduce preventable illness. Karucan's WASH work is delivered alongside health and livelihoods so that investments in water infrastructure translate into measurable reductions in water-borne disease.
